Sharing the road with large transport trucks does not have to be complicated or intimidating. Simply drive at a safe speed and assess the situation accordingly.
Truck drivers are on the job and trying their best to stay safe while being on time with their delivery schedule. Sometimes it can be stressful for them to meet those deadlines so, as motorists, we need to make an effort to share the road courteously and calmly.
Read on to learn how you can do your part to make the road a safer place for truck drivers and other motorists.
Avoid Distracted Driving
When sharing the road with large trucks, be focused and avoid distractions. While distractions like texting, fiddling with music settings, or getting into a heated argument are never good when driving a car, being preoccupied when driving near large trucks can be especially dangerous. Distracted driving is well-known as one of the leading causes of truck accidents.
We recommend taking a defensive approach when sharing the road with a semi-truck. It is impossible to overstate the significance of driving cautiously and attentively, especially while sharing the road with larger vehicles. Defensive driving means being aware of your surroundings, controlling your vehicle's speed, anticipating the unexpected, and being ready to react appropriately to other truck drivers.
Use Your Turn Signal
While many drivers on the road often forego the use of their turn signals, thinking it is optional, the truth is turn signals can ensure a safer road for all motorists. The turn signal allows for our directional intentions to be known by other drivers. It is beneficial for truck drivers who need every visual cue to know where other motorists intend to go and in which lanes they plan to be.
Alerting a truck driver of your intentions is a courteous gesture but also one that can save lives. Truck drivers need additional time to react when other drivers stop, turn, or change lanes. As a result, drivers should always apply their turn signals before attempting sudden driving lane changes.
Obey the Speed Limit
Safe driving always involves respecting the speed limit. Careless speeding can lead to fatal car accidents.
If you drive safely and slowly, you allow yourself enough time to react adequately to unanticipated events on the road. You can avoid potential dangers such as car accidents, road work, or heavy debris that may have found its way into the middle of the road.
Pass Trucks Correctly
Large trucks have a lot at their back end, so it is important never to attempt to cut in front of them. It takes them much longer to come to a halt than it does for any other private passenger vehicle. Avoid cutting in front of a truck because the driver may not notice you, which could lead to an accident.
Before you decide to pass, find just how long the truck's load is. Some trucks tow two trailers at once. Make sure you have enough room and time to complete the lane switch and ensure you can see the truck's front end in your rearview mirror.
When passing a truck, ensure you do so on its left side because its right side has a much larger blind spot. Always make yourself visible to the truck so that they may react to your maneuver to overtake them on the road.
