Becoming a professional commercial truck driver is an exciting new adventure on the open road. But, with lots to learn, rookie drivers new to the industry should keep a few pitfalls in mind — like knowing their route!
We’ve gathered some important tips from the Professional Transport Driver Training School experts. Read on to learn more.
Prepare for the Learning Curve
Whether you have experience driving commercial vehicles or have never been in a cab, you are bound to learn something new. So show up to truck driving school with an open mind and a willingness to take instruction.
Here are the main
program subjects
new truck drivers will learn:
Learning a new skill can be challenging and in the beginning it can feel like information overload, but if you are patient, determined, and practice, the learning curve won’t feel as steep.
Have the Right Expectations and Understand the Reality of Trucking
Truck driving jobs come with scenery that few get to witness, but driving commercial trucks is more than incredible landscapes and travelling to different cities.
Commercial truck drivers provide a service to their employer’s customers and need to be efficient, timely, and courteous as they deliver their goods. Trucking doesn’t always go smoothly with delivery line-ups, breakdowns, weather conditions, and sometimes getting lost.
Driving long-haul requires a lot of hours, often not speaking with anyone. While it is challenging for new truck drivers, maintaining a good balance of sleep, nutrition, and communication with loved ones and employers helps personal well-being and optimal performance.
The better prepared a driver is, the fewer difficulties they are likely to experience.
Be Confident but be a Humble Driver
Hauling heavy loads and squeezing into challenging spaces with large vehicles takes a lot of confidence. Navigating unfamiliar terrain, traffic issues, and changing weather conditions does too.
Rookie truck drivers may be anxious about meeting deadlines and push themselves beyond their limits to achieve them. Unfortunately, it places the driver, the vehicle, shipment, and the company’s reputation at risk.
Road safety is more important than any unnecessary risk, and admitting to errors or asking for help shows that drivers care about their performance and are willing to accept direction.
Having the right attitude makes everyone’s job easier and builds trust with trainers, employers and the companies they deliver for.
Don’t be a Know-It-All
Knowledge is a powerful thing! Becoming an expert in one’s field is a confidence booster and feels good. However, the most successful people will tell you that you can’t possibly know everything and they remain open to instruction and advice.
As a rookie truck driver, there will be plenty of learning opportunities at the hands of instructors, fellow drivers, employers, and warehouse staff. Utilizing their expertise is smart because you advance your knowledge faster than learning the hard way on your own.
